Imperial Four Gospels of Ivan Alexander is illuminated manuscript Gospel Book in the Middle Bulgarian, prepared and illustrated in 1355-1356 for Tsar Ivan Alexander the Second Bulgarian Empire. The manuscript is considered one of the most important manuscripts of medieval Bulgarian culture. The manuscript, now in the British Library (Add. MS 39627), contains the text of the four Gospels, illustrated with 366 miniatures and consists of 286 parchment folios, 33 by 24.3 cm in size.

Bible translations of contemporary Bulgarian date from 1820 and were largely organized by Protestant missionaries. Bulgarian Orthodox Church initially prefers to continue using the old Bulgarian.

Archimandrite Theodosius, abbot of the monastery Bistrita in Romania, translated the New Testament for the British and Foreign Bible Society, which was printed in St. Petersburg in 1823. "It was started by Archimandrite Theodosius, with the sanction of Gregory, Patriarch of Constantinople. (Gospel of Matthew in Church Slavonic and Bulgarian 1823) was published by the Russian Bible Society." In 1835 Bulgarian monk West University began a new translation of the New Testament. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and the type first civilian heroes was used. In 1859, two editions were published. In 1866, a new edition of "pocket" with a revised text by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted nine times.

In the period 1840-1860 on (Turnovo) dialect East was adopted as a literary Bulgarian language and Macedonian dialect, which was translated the New Testament, it was widely rejected. Until 1858 West University over much of the Old Testament. Riggs meets West University and discussed possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neophyte objected review so that Riggs took translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited Bulgarian teacher Christodoulos Kostovich to help with the review.
